Can pregnancy or postpartum changes trigger thyroid problems?
Yes, thyroid problems can show up during or after pregnancy. Postpartum thyroiditis can cause a temporary overactive phase, an underactive phase, or both. The confusing part is that symptoms can look like ordinary postpartum exhaustion: palpitations, anxiety, fatigue, weight changes, hair shedding, low mood, or feeling unusually cold or hot. If symptoms feel stronger than expected, last longer, or there is a history of thyroid disease or autoimmune disease, thyroid testing is worth discussing with a clinician.
